The land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include
soils, waters, plants and animals, or collectively: the land

Santa Ana River Greenway
California

The Dangermond Group has been part of the 110-mile Santa Ana River Trail planning effort since the early 1960's. The original focus of the trail was to provide a recreational trail to encourage exercise, the enjoyment of nature and the appreciation of historic elements along the Santa Ana River. However, as Orange County and the Inland Empire have lost their rural character, pressures on the Santa Ana River from pollution, floods, vehicle traffic and local development have increased.

As part of our recent trail planning efforts while working under the auspices of Santa Ana River Project Authority (SAWPA), we identified and responded to a CalTrans Community Planning grant. We worked with local agencies to develop a concept for the trails that incorporated a variety of community planning values into the original trail concept. These efforts culminated in CalTrans awarding one of its first Community Planning Grants to the City of Corona for planning elements of the Santa Ana River Trail, Bikeway and Greenway from Yorba Linda through Norco and in San Bernardino County. Under the City of Corona's leadership, The Dangermond Group will work with over 15 agencies to plan a trail that incorporates recreational values into a greenway that reduces pollution to the river, protects and restores habitat, increases groundwater and provides for bicycle commuting to regional transit connections. The Conceptual Plan for this portion of the trail is expected to be completed by November, 2004.
